Parent Child Interactive Therapy (ages 2-7)
PCIT is an evidenced based treatment program designed for parents or caregivers of children who are exhibiting emotional and behavioral problems.
How it works
PCIT works by working with parents to strengthen their relationship with their child through play time. PCIT also works on building a child's confidence and teaching positive social skills while helping parents set limits and provide positive discipline in a calm manner.
What to expect
PCIT has two phases of treatment
CDI : Child- Directed Interaction
During this phase, the focus is on establishing warmth in your relationship with your child. You learn skills that play therapist use to help your child feel calm and feel secure with you. The skills you learn as a parent help put the "joy" back in to wanting to play with your child and looking forward to spending that one-on-one time together. Other skills that are taught include learning when to ignore unwanted behaviors and reinforcing good behaviors.
PDI- Parent- Directed Interaction
In this phase, you will be learning a specific way of providing discipline skills. At this point, children generally begin showing more respect and comply easier to directions given.
Parents begin to feel more confident in their parenting skills and feel relief on being able to deliver a structured discipline method.
How long does it take?
PCIT can be completed within 12-20 sessions, however this depends on consistency and completion of homework.
Desired outcomes can include:
-Decreased aggressive behaviors
-Decreased defiance
-Improved compliance
-Increased self-esteem
-Decrease in parental frustration
